Why Transcend Invested In welevel

Updated: Oct 23

Every platform transition in gaming has produced a small number of studios that understood what the new moment made possible before the rest of the industry caught up. Those studios didn't just succeed. They defined what came next. welevel is such a company. We are proud to announce that Transcend led their $8.5M Series A and my partner Andrew joined the board.
THE ECONOMICS OF AMBITION
The gaming market is growing toward $353 billion by 2030. Despite that, the companies that led the industry for the last several decades are in retreat. They are not cancelling games and shutting down studios because players stopped playing. Rather, the cost structures associated with developing and distributing interactive entertainment "the old way" are a forcing function toward an increasingly narrow creative and commercial lane. As we noted recently in The Read, the margin for error has collapsed at the top.
To be clear, the retreat is not a strategic miscalculation so much as a structural inevitability. A studio carrying the headcount obligations and marketing assumptions of the last growth cycle faces a simple equation: make the safe game or risk the company. This risk-aversion compounds and creative ambition migrates to where the cost structure allows it.
The nature of that migration is noteworthy. The genres with the deepest player engagement - the ones that reward hundreds of hours, that generate the most committed communities - are increasingly being explored by small studios unencumbered by franchise obligations and safe-game pressure. The survival city-builder space is a clear example where demand is proven, the ceiling on a well-designed entry is high, and no title has yet delivered on the full potential of the category.
AI AS ARCHITECTURE, NOT ACCELERATION
Most studios incorporating AI today are doing the same things slightly faster. What I described in The Algorithmic Artisan as the more consequential shift - AI deployed not as a replacement for what teams would have made anyway, but as an enabler of experiences not previously possible - remains rare. The first is an efficiency story. The second is potentially transformational but requires building the studio differently from the beginning, not retrofitting pipelines and tactics designed for an outdated set of market assumptions.
welevel made that choice in 2021 and the result is not cheaper production of familiar content. It is SolidRiver, a survival city-builder on Unreal Engine 5 built on a premise the genre has never fully delivered: not merely a world to explore, but a world that responds. One where the choices you make, the town you build, and the story you accumulate shape what the game becomes for you. CLAI, welevel's proprietary AI platform, is what makes that possible. Founder Christian Heimerl says "It's like a dungeon master from Dungeons & Dragons creating moments that feel personal, believable, and yours."
THE PATH TO CONVICTION
welevel is one of the first investments out of Transcend Fund III and it represents the thesis in its clearest form. In a $263 billion global gaming industry where technology is rewriting the rules, entrepreneurs that actively harness modern tools and techniques to challenge the old assumptions are the ones that will define the next several decades of this business.
The conviction trail in this case was born well over a year ago. The Seed round drew founders of Oculus, ESL, Crunchyroll, and Shopify, alongside a Roblox board member, BITKRAFT, and Goodwater. My partner Andrew also backed Christian personally in that round, writing his own check and advising the company in the run up to Transcend leading the Series A. This round also added the founder of Bigpoint and senior executives from Century Games as strategic angels, alongside institutional European co-investors and grant support from the German government, extending the studio's runway considerably.
The product is already providing its own signal. SolidRiver is in closed alpha and players are engrossed, clocking over one hundred hours in-game. The creation of worlds that feel genuinely alive and responsive to players is something the industry has been chasing for decades. Very few teams have the creative conviction and technical depth to turn that ambition into reality. welevel is one of them, and we believe they will be among the companies that define the next generation of the medium.
If you're an Unreal Engine developer, technical artist, or community builder, the company is actively hiring at welevel.com.
